Ukulele / Singer / Songwriter Victoria Vox Vox prides her music brand on quality and originality, striving to provide the best customer service around: “I love that there are people on my mailing list today, who first signed up 11 years ago. There’s a reason for that.” Vox was far from a child musical prodigy, but got the music bug early on, and began writing songs when she was 10 and started performing at coffeehouses as a solo artist and in bands by the time she was 17. She’s ever since been dedicated to honing her craft and has grown incredibly over the years as a writer and performer, tackling the violin, oboe, trumpet, guitar, bass, ukulele, and squeezebox. Previously musing with a guitar, Vox began appearing in clubs as a ukulele musician 4 years after receiving a degree in songwriting from the prestigious Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), and the welcome was a warm one indeed! Even before the official release date of her debut ukulele album in 2006 -- Victoria Vox and Her Jumping Flea released on her own label, OBUS Music -- Vox was offered an endorsement deal with KoAloha Ukuleles (Honolulu, HI). The disc was featured on NPR’s “To The Best of Our Knowledge” and its songs were picked up for licensing in television and independent films. Vox has been awarded runner-up for “My Darlin’ Beau” (Jumping Flea) and First Place for “C’est Noyé” (Chameleon) in the International Acoustic Music Awards. She has been included in Relix Magazine’s list of artists to watch and won a WAMA (Washington D.C. Area Music Award) in 2009 for Folk-Contemporary Vocalist. Also -- hardly the big break she’s been waiting for -- Vox appeared on the Jay Leno Show in December 2009 to demonstrate her perfected mouth trumpet! The new album, Exact Change, is produced by Mike Tarantino with accompanying musicians from the band, the Boulder Acoustic Society (Denver), who contribute a blend of traditional roots and blues to Vox's ultimately pop-rock sensibility ("Oh I Wonder"), but the album has a distinct worldly flair as tunes with French and Flamenco influences ("Mon Cheri" and "Intermission") are visited by accordion, upright bass, and banjo. Vox's silky vocal lines, both haunting and hopeful, encompass every song and slide right into the cracks like a thick lacquer, relaxing in a beach hammock in "Technicolor Way" or encouraging the shy to dance on "La Musique," for which Vox has also incorporated a squeezebox she managed to acquire during her travels. Retiring the guitar until a later date, the 2010 Vox is performing full time on ukulele. Known for her refreshingly modern and rhythmic ukulele technique, Exact Change continues to propel Vox’s original style towards the contemporary, but it remains clear that her voice and songs themselves are at the heart of everything she produces. Originally from Green Bay, WI, Vox now lives in Baltimore, and averages 125+ live performances each year, playing at a mixed bag of venues across the United States, Europe, and Canada. She’s an undiscovered gem… but won’t be for long. Discography:
